Fever Dream, 2022, oil on canvas

Where does your practice originate from?
The aesthetic sensibility of my practice comes from growing up impoverished in various Canadian small towns. My work deals with psychology and/or mood rather than just depiction. That’s why I often paint contradictory spaces. Beautiful nature with a sinister feeling of foreboding, or a mundane or even ugly space elevated to beauty.

What’s something that remains timeless in your eyes?
The beauty of nature.

How do you define your artistic research in three words?
Beauty, decay, edges.

What are you dreaming about these days?
I rarely remember my dreams anymore.

Where do you find beauty?
In unexpected places. I was watching my wife leave to pick up our kids from school the other day. She was quickly throwing her long coat on. I noticed the way her hair hung against the coat as she opened the door to leave and for some reason it was just stunning. I’ve thought about it for days.
