DORA JERIDI
Name: Dora Jeridi
Age: 35
Birthplace: Paris, France
Home: Paris, France
Practice: Painting
Where does your practice originate from?
I don’t really know. One day, when I was around 25, I woke up one morning and said to myself "I have to paint!" That was very clear. And that was it! But if I dig a little deeper, I would say that it is the will to stop discoursing on things that led me to painting. I was a humanities student before, I was taught to speak, and I started to feel that in the end, you could argue about anything. I was looking for a more tangible sense of truth, one that involved emotions and an assertive subjectivity.
What’s something that remains timeless in your eyes?
Painting. Michaël Borremans, a contemporary Belgian painter I looked at a lot at one time said “Painting is like bread or a hammer, it's always been there and it always will be there.” I agree with that.
How do you define your artistic research in a few words?
Trying to dance with uncertainty.
What are you dreaming about these days?
In my last dream, I was having sex with my lover in a rusty lake of an industrial area.
Where do you find beauty?
It can pop up anywhere. Beauty is surprising. I remember when I discovered Le Jus by the French painter Gérard Gasiorowski, I liked it a lot. In this series, he paints with his own shit, or more precisely with the juice of his excrements preserved for the making of pies. It sounds awful but the work is actually very beautiful and poetic.
