DENISE RUDOLF FRANK
Name: Denise Rudolf Frank
Age: 29
Birthplace: Vienna, Austria
Home: Vienna woods
Discipline: Painting
What’s usually the starting point of your practice, and when does your work feel complete?
I start with the blank canvas on the floor, where I directly work with my hands. The colors and shapes emerge intuitively, that is so to speak the first emotional explosion which I interpret in the second step. Often, I discover !gures and shapes which I try to work out. A painting for me is ready when the eye of the viewer restlessly roams over the canvas and doesn’t find a focal point. Thereby, I achieve that one always !nds something new and the work never gets dull.
What are you obsessed with?
By taking a look at my paintings it’s clear that I am obsessed with colors, color combinations and composition.
What are the interactions that you seek between your work and the viewer?
It’s important to me that I don’t dictate what to think or feel about my paintings. I want to give the viewer a certain freedom to build their own stories and the possibility to discover even more within themselves. It’s more exciting for me when the observer interprets my art to a greater extent than myself.
What is your commitment, both artistically and personally?
I would say that my entire life is a commitment. I cannot exist without my art and vice versa. I live in my art. It is the !rst and last thing on my mind each and every day, it is very omnipresent.
Who are some of the artists that have been the biggest influence on you?
Firstly, Wilhelm Drach, who was my professor at Highschool. He has not only taught me the courage to use colors, but also the aection for abstraction. Otherwise, Egon Schiele, Georg Baselitz, Ida Ekblad and Katherine Bradford. Also, young artists such as Daisy Parris.
Where is the beauty for you today?
For me, the beauty is nature. I just recently moved into a house at the edge of a forest and I continue to realize more and more how important nature is for all of us. Being in nature helps us to see and appreciate the smaller things in life. For workaholics like me, it’s the perfect place to relax and boost energy.
