What’s usually the starting point of your practice, and when does your work feel complete?
The starting point is usually a feeling, a word, an energy, or the need to see a certain color. I like to be surprised by my work. I know it’s complete when it ends up somewhere entirely different from what I was expecting. I have been learning to understand when things are enough, so I have become very intuitive when it comes to paintings feeling complete. It’s also about knowing that the work lives on beyond me, my studio and the point I feel it’s finished. Completion is about learning to let go of work.
What are you obsessed with?
Cats, checking my emails, saving money, painting.
What are the interactions that you seek between your work and the viewer?
I seek an emotional understanding, or for us to feel like we’re not alone. I would like my work to start conversations between people and what they are going through or what is going on around us.
What is your commitment, both artistically and personally?
I am intensely committed and loyal artistically and personally. My commitment to painting is unstoppable and undefeatable.
Who are some of the artists that have been the biggest influence on you?
Blinky Palermo, Roni Horn, Francis Bacon.
Where is the beauty for you today?
Beauty lies in color, or when an animal trusts you so much they show you his tummy.
